Island Escape: My Rejuvenating Stay at Half Moon in Montego Bay

Some places leave footprints on your soul, and Half Moon resort in Montego Bay, part of the Salamander Collection, is one of them. Just a breezy 10-minute drive from the Sangster International Airport, this luxury getaway offered me four nights of pure Caribbean magic.

A Room with a View

I was graciously upgraded to the Prestigious Ocean Junior Suite in Founders Cove, a space that beautifully fuses modern luxury with classic Caribbean charm. Widely popular and recently remodeled in 2021, these suites dot the coastline like a string of elegant pearls—each offering stunning ocean views and a timeless feel that’s helped make Half Moon a sought-after hideaway for kings, queens, celebrities, and power brokers alike.

Just steps from my door, I had access to a serene private beach area complete with lounge chairs. It felt like my own personal slice of paradise, perfect for quiet morning reflection or an afternoon soak in the sun. Also, just outside my suite was a tranquil pool—close enough to feel private—and I was just moments away from the tennis courts, fitness center, Cedar Bar, and the Seagrape Restaurant. Convenience and indulgence masterfully paired.

Fitness Meets Fun

My days were energized and balanced. I played tennis, took a lively pickleball lesson, learned to kayak, floated in the ocean, swam in the pool, and joined a strength training class. The resort’s grab-and-go bike system made getting around easy, and golf carts are also available if you prefer a breezy ride between activities.

One of the most memorable moments was chatting with a tennis coach, Troy, who’s been part of the Half Moon family for 40 years. He started as a ball boy and learned the sport at the resort. Today, he's a seasoned pro who gave me quite a few pointers to apply back home—a living tribute to the resort’s legacy.

Flavors to Remember

Though Half Moon isn’t an all-inclusive resort, it does offer optional meal plans for guests who prefer seamless, curated dining. I didn’t choose a plan myself, but it’s a helpful option for those who like that kind of structure. What I did appreciate was that my reservation came with daily complimentary breakfast—a major plus and the perfect way to ease into each morning. Fresh fruit, made-to-order omelets, island flavors…it felt like a gentle invitation to savor the day ahead.

Outside of breakfast, I enjoyed the flexibility of à la carte dining throughout the resort. It allowed me to indulge with intention and avoid that over-the-top mindset that can sneak in at all-inclusive properties. Instead of grazing all day, I looked forward to each carefully chosen meal.

Yes, food and drinks are on the premium side—but if you’re familiar with dining out in cities like New York, Chicago, D.C., or L.A., the pricing feels right in line. And the culinary highlights? Absolutely unforgettable:

  • Sugar Mill Restaurant: Led by top island chef Christopher Golding, this destination restaurant infuses every dish with nuanced Jamaican flavor. The Lemon Jerk Marinated Chicken Supreme was masterfully prepared—bright, bold, and unforgettable. And don’t skip the rolls: too yummy!

  • Delmare Restaurant: Their Risotto Delmare was a coastal masterpiece. The bread? Addictive in the best way.

  • Cedar Bar: Located at the heart of the resort, Cedar Bar quickly became a favorite. One afternoon, I indulged in sweet potato crab cakes—a delightful surprise—paired with crispy truffle fries. Insider tip: Cedar Bar offers amazing sunset views. Add a cocktail, live music, and the ocean breeze, and you've found paradise. A beautiful place to stop before heading to dinner.

Experiences That Stay with You

Half Moon is much more than a beautiful place to unwind—it’s a playground for the senses. At the Fern Tree Spa, guests can immerse themselves in a world of wellness, where lush surroundings and soothing treatments invite deep restoration. The resort’s Equestrian Centre, a treasured part of its heritage, offers unforgettable horseback experiences, including a ride that ends with a swim in the Caribbean Sea alongside your horse. Yes, I'm told it’s every bit as magical as it sounds.

Golf lovers will find joy at the championship golf course, while adventure seekers can dive beneath the surface on a scuba excursion along Jamaica’s vibrant, coral-kissed coastline.

And for travelers who crave extra space and privacy, Half Moon’s new luxury villas deliver elevated comfort with the same thoughtful service and timeless charm the resort is renowned for.

Where Elegance Meets Legacy

Half Moon is officially Verified Luxury by Forbes Travel Guide, and its Lester Bar was recently named one of the 58 best hotel bars in the world. The resort has welcomed a dazzling roster of guests over the decades—Presidents, royalty, celebrities, and more. And during my stay, I witnessed the arrival of Jamaica’s Prime Minister and other VIP arrivals, adding a brush with history to my own travel story.

Jamaica’s Highest-Rated Gem

With its unmatched beauty, thoughtful hospitality, and storied reputation, it’s no surprise that Half Moon is the highest-rated resort in Jamaica. Just a 3-hour direct flight from Washington, D.C., it offers a world of elegance that’s easy to reach—and impossible to forget. I can't wait to go back!
